Laser vs Inkjet: The Real Cost Question Most Buyers Get Wrong

Every few months, the same conversation happens in my office. Someone from Account Services appears at my desk and says: "Hey, we need a printer for the third floor. Can we get an inkjet? They're cheaper."

I've heard that sentence, or a version of it, at least a dozen times in six years. I'm a procurement manager at a 200-person marketing agency, which means I've managed our office equipment budget—roughly $180,000 a year—since 2019. What Getting This Wrong Actually Costs

There's one more cost that doesn't get enough attention: what you do with the prints. If you're mailing invoices or marketing materials, the postage dwarfs the toner. That single habit—running TCO on every equipment decision—is why our printing budget has held steady while the company grew from 120 to 200 employees. It's not glamorous. But it works.
